The aperitif hikes of the Terroir de Caux !

During the summer season, I had the opportunity to discover all that the Terroir de Caux Tourist Office was organizing in terms of guided tours, gourmet hikes and especially the “rando apéro” as they are called here! This kind of hikes makes all those who have never heard this term before smile.

Nearly 70 people were expected at this famous aperitif hike on Thursday, August 8, 2019. A figure that proves the notoriety of these organized outings, but also the need for a third guide. It is thus with pleasure that I accepted the proposal of my colleagues, that to accompany the group on this hike of 12km.

It was under a slightly cloudy sky that the departure took place around 4:30 pm at the Tourist Office of Quiberville. We left for the heights of Quiberville and we passed by the beautiful panorama with this breathtaking view of the sea, also reminding us of an African landscape thanks to the Acacias. Between land and sea, that’s what I like here. Facing the immensity of the ocean from the cliffs while having your back to the plains.

The hike starts on the beach at Quiberville-sur-Mer

We started from the beach for a loop that is not marked but which Aurore explains the step-by-step in one of her blog posts!

Gr 21 and Flainville Chapel

We took part of the GR21 to reach the hamlet of Flainville, where we stopped to visit the Saint Julien Chapel. We also passed in front of the old Bread Oven of the village, where every year in the middle of August and since 1994, the Bread Oven Festival is organized. Some monuments, historical places or small popular corners were highlighted during this hike and allowed me to know more about the heritage of my native region.

During the excursion, I actually met two charming ladies residing in Quiberville and a surrounding village, who knew my parents. We talked about many things before we realized the little ride. It was very nice to rediscover life in Quiberville as well as the villages of my childhood, and especially when my parents were younger.

During the entire hike, the group was able to maintain a rather brisk pace. This even allowed us to arrive largely in time at the Café Librairie “Le Lutin” for this famous aperitif so much awaited by all! (NB: this establishment is now closed)

For this aperitif we were entitled to a drink of our choice: Norman cider or organic apple juice, accompanied by a slice of charcuterie and a piece of cheese, from local producers. For the sweet bites, it was a small crunchy shortbread with almonds and a cannelé covered with chocolate (homemade), enough to give a boost after this active walk!

After rediscovering the place and visiting the nooks and crannies of the café-library, we headed back to the Tourist Office, where we finished the hike. Some hikers had anticipated by parking their cars in Quiberville village.

So, did you enjoy this walk?

For my part I really enjoyed this little hike since it allowed me to rediscover on foot, some places and ways that I regularly take by car and that I never took the time until now to explore as I did that day. Believe me, we don’t take enough time to discover our heritage and local riches when they are right in front of us.

There is no doubt, I love my Normandy!”
